I recently read a news article rationalizing earmarks. The concluding paragraph summed up the argument that this is human nature and voters need to realize that earmarks are good for the community being represented and that they are inevitable. However, this view is merely the obvious result of a more fundamental change in the acceptance of federal expansion in a way our founding fathers saw, but did not institute in the constitution.
We, the American people are watching the most fundamental change in our republic since the civil war and like the civil war, the majority of American voters trusted our government leaders to do the right thing for us as a nation.
The current popular culture is different. It has a profound impact on the founding principles of our government. In the Civil War, the noble cause was implementing liberty to all citizens and liberty won out over economic privilege. In the current populism or majority rule continues, the noble cause has been misplaced by the ignoble cause, implementing equality to all. Note the meaningful use of "equality". Equality equals democratic rule allowing all citizens to receive equal benefits regardless of their unequal contribution.
By definition and logic, equality restricts individual freedom whereas liberty does not. It is a fundamental difference between liberty and equality. If this political revolution is won by the egalitarians, we will see our liberty disappear. In fact, we have an example of this future America that has moved to this position. That example is France which spends 53% of it's GDP via government outlays. In the past 10 years, America has moved from less than 20% of it's GDP from government to 25% and effectively have almost 50% of our people paying no net taxes other than SS. In France, the government has capitulated to the large public unions and is undergoing mob resistance to reducing these entitlements. If France fails in their attempt to reduce entitlements, the future of France as an economic power will continue to diminish, as it has over the past 100 years.
Their country will have a minority paying for the majority and Viola- they are no longer a republic, but a popular democracy ruled by the popular agenda of the time. This is happening in America as in France, the workers (alias civil servants) are becoming the majority as well as the benefactors. It is nearly impossible to alter a welfare system that is ruled by the majority of voting benefactors! The original concept of our founders of individuals competing in a constitutional republic will cease!
I do not look forward to this time when everyone will be 'entitled' to their equal share. I also wonder who will want to continue to work with any extra effort if one's labors are equally distributed to all the people.
This isn't a simple cultural war between party ideology and economics, this is a war about the survival of the fundamental principles and culture of our republic and founding fathers.
